Thank you to Graphic Designer Beth Toner for sharing her professional skills with our Senior 1 Art students through a series of wonderfully informative and creative Typography tasks. Students appreciate and value these sessions in skill building for their Leaving Cert projects.
Beth also did a book design workshop over four weeks with our 2nd year Art students and the following is what she had to say about the experience:
"Before Christmas I had the pleasure of working with two 2nd year groups of Bush Post Primary School. As a graphic designer, I was very excited to conduct a book design workshop and it only seemed fitting for these students to design a Christmas Book in time for the festive season. What a fun few weeks!
The workshop took place over four weeks and involved creative writing, brainstorming, design decision-making and plenty of group work. To design images for a book, you need a story. The students got an exciting and fun opportunity to develop their literacy skills through the process of plot and character creations. The imaginations of these students didn't disappoint.
Each group of students had a section of the story to illustrate. As a team of designers they had to make decisions on compositions, colour, materials, text etc. They made these decisions through the process of group brainstorming, thumbnail sketching and they learned book design vocabulary along the way.
Taking each groups lovely artwork, I then collated their work to make a Christmas book. All was delivered back into the classroom for the students to see the finished product just in time for their Christmas break."
