TY Business students, accompanied by their teachers Ms. O’Connor and Ms. McCartney, had the opportunity to visit Lidl at St. Helena’s Terrace on Monday, March 11th as part of an enterprise visit out. Gary McCusker, the area manager for Lidl in Louth met with the students and gave a short introduction on the German supermarket giant Lidl. Lidl currently employs a total of 115 staff in Co. Louth in its five stores located on Avenue Road and St Helena’s Terrace in Dundalk, on Donore Road and at the M1 Retail Park in Drogheda and on the Dublin Road in Ardee. He talked to the students about the growth of Lidl in Ireland and the Lidl discount retail model. Next year marks Lidl’s 20th year in Ireland.
Gary took the students on a tour of the supermarket floor. He spoke to the students about Lidl’s main competitor, Aldi, and the supermarket’s best sellers. Gary also took the students into the warehouse and explained the distribution of products into the Lidlbranch. Students learned about career opportunitieswithin the retail industry. Gary explained to the students that Lidl is proud to champion the living wage in Ireland. Lidl believes its staff are central to the success of the Lidl brand. They look after the customers, drive operations and support communities throughout Ireland. Among Lidl’s 4,300 employees nationwide, Gary explained the pay change will benefit 16% of employees, while all other employees working in Lidl already earn in excess of the living wage. The tour was interactive and informative and enjoyed by everyone. Students received a Lidlgoodie bag at the end of the tour.
