Action plan for academic year: to achieve a Biodiversity Flag by completing the following tasks
Our two overall objectives
1) Increase levels of awareness and make 2) Practical improvements
Tasks
- Survey students to determine what they know about biodiversity
- Deliver peer education to students on biodiversity
- Re-survey students in the hope that thier undestanding of biodiversity has improved.
- Complete habitat mapping which illustrates different habitats within our school
- Hold a poster/slogan competition to come up with a new Green Code relating to biodiversity
Recent activities
All students were surveyed and re- surveyed on the topic of biodiversity (results will follow)
Peer learning lessons were delivered on biodiversity.
Links were made with the community as we endeavor to fill our Re-turn bins and raise money for charity.
We added to biodiversity by creating a biodiversity area.
We engage in cleans up.
We are collecting batteries for Barretstown.
We are holding competitions.
Members of the Bush PP Green Schools’ Sustainability Team visited CSPE classes in October to enhance students’ understanding of biodiversity. Prior to their visit, the team conducted a survey to identify what students already knew and what areas needed further explanation. Using this feedback, they planned and delivered an engaging lesson on biodiversity, raising awareness about the threats it faces and the actionswe can take to protect it. Well done to all involved — great teamwork for a greener future!
Top Energy Saving Tips:
- Many people keep their thermostat too high. Check it and if its above 20ºC turn it down. Lowering your thermostat by just 1ºC will knock 10% off your heating bill.
- Much of the heat loss from a house occurs through the windows, particularly if they are single glazed. So keep your curtains closed at night, even in empty rooms and also ensure that the curtains don’t hang over the radiators as that will just funnel all your heat out the window.
- Close room doors to separate heated from unheated areas of your home, and minimise the area you are heating. There is no need to spend money heating rooms nobody is in.
- Turn the lights off when leaving a room.
- Switch appliances off rather than leaving them on standby. This will save up to 20% of your appliances’ energy use.
- Make better use of the timers on your immersion or boiler so you can control when the heating comes on and goes off. This means you have heating and hot water when and where you want
Bush Post Primary’s Green code
We, the Green Schools Committee, will endeavour to work together with the staff and students of Bush Post Primary, to reduce litter and waste being sent to landfill, by increasing recycling. It is our mission to raise awareness of the problem areas in the school, highlight the benefits of a greener school and introduce a recycling programme that will achieve this.
Each member of the school community is responsible for the litter and we urge you to take pride in your school.
Let us all make Bush a greener place
Green Schools Flag
Bush PP have been awarded four Green Schools’ flags. We are looking forward to gaining a fifth flag in 2026 – the biodiversity flag. This flag will be awarded when we increase awareness of the importance of native plants, animals and habitats, and increase species-richness in our locality.
